Online Meeting held between M.U.S.T. and College of Future Technology, Peking University

The Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) and the College of Future Technology, Peking University, held an online meeting in the afternoon of November 6th, 2022. The attendants from M.U.S.T. were Vice President Paul K. H. Tam, Vice President Jiang Zhihong, Associate Vice President Zhu Yizhun, Faculty of Chinese Medicine Dean Zeng Li, Faculty of Medicine Dean Manson Fok and Vice Dean Zhang Kang, University Hospital Vice President Valencia Chang, Assistant Prof. Chen Yan from Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Vincent Lui from the University of Hong Kong. The attendants from the College of Future Technology, Peking University, were Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Cheng Heping, Dean of Faculty of Future Technology Prof. Xiao Ruiping, Vice Dean of Future Technology Xi Jiangzhong, Assistant Dean of Future Technology Wang Yangming, and 8 more researchers.

Dean Xiao Ruiping introduced the Faculty of Future Technology, Peking University, and its plans for future development. Vice President Paul K. H. Tam introduced the reorganization of the Medical Sciences Division of M.U.S.T. and its focus on future growth. Based on both parties’ progress and the agreement of cooperative intention signed in 2020, both sides were confident in future collaborations.

Reports on the research programs were given by both parties. Prof. Zhang Xiuqin discussed non-human primate research and translation. Principal investigator Zhao Yang and Vice President Paul Tam gave excellent reports of studies on regenerative medicine with the use of small molecules for cell reprogramming, and from the angle of pediatric surgery and organoids, respectively. Both parties considered regenerative medicine to be the trend for future medicine, for it will make great contributions to the “big health” of humankind. Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean Prof. Zhang Kang shared the progress made by the collaboration of the Al medicine research team and the researchers of the Faculty of Future Technology, Peking University, while pointing out the opportunities and challenges in related fields, and issuing his hope to, through these discussions, further the cooperation and promote the development of AI medicine. Vice President Jiang Zhihong, M.U.S.T., gave an introduction to the establishment and applications of the platform of omics analysis at the University’s State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine and hoped to optimize the resources between both parties, and leverage the University’s strengths of Traditional Chinese Medicine research to participate in the relevant medical research programs of the Peking University. Associate Vice President Zhu Yizhun shared the recent discoveries in pharmacy and clinical research, expecting further exchange and collaboration on the development and commercialization of new drugs. Assistant editor of NEJM Zhao Jianfei and Vice Dean of Future Technology Xi Jiangzhong introduced the training program for Chief Medical Officers (CMO) at Peking University and reported the study of precision oncology based on tumor-like cell cluster chips, respectively. Both parties recognized the significance of the CMO training program on the sustainable development of medicine. M.U.S.T. also welcomed the opportunity of collaboration on this program via this meeting and looked forward to further discussions on the collaboration afterward.

At the end of the meeting, both parties had a detailed discussion of how to proceed with future cooperation, including the prospect of signing a framework agreement of collaboration with the Faculty of Future Technology, Peking University, hosting a joint forum, and achieving sustainable development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in response to the nation’s policy. The meeting concluded with warm remarks made by Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Cheng Heping and Vice President Paul K. H. Tam.
