“The 20th Meeting of the Consortium Globalization of Chinese Medicine and Innovative Research in Natural Medicines” was successfully held from August 19th to 22th, 2024 at the Hengqin International Science and Technology Innovation Center. Hosted by the Consortium Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM) and Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.).
The conference invited a number of officiating guests, including Academician Yung-chi Cheng (Chairman of CGCM), Mr. Kun-Wai Cheang (Committee member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund), Mr. Chon-Kit Lei (Acting division director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau), Academician Xin-Sheng Yao (Honorary Dean of the School of Pharmacy of Jinan University), Academician Kwok-Fai So (Dean of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Central Nervous Regeneration Institute of Jinan University), Academician Shi-lin Chen (Chief Researcher of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences), Professors Hen-Hong Chang and Rudolf Bauer (Vice Chairman of the CGCM), Chair Professors Paul Kwong-Hang Tam and Zhi-Hong Jiang, (Vice President of the M.U.S.T.), etc.

At the grand opening ceremony on August 20th, Academician Yung-chi Cheng, Chair Professor Joseph Hun-Wei Lee (President of M.U.S.T.), Chair Professor Paul Kwong-Hang Tam, and Mr. Kun-Wai Cheang delivered their speeches, respectively. Chair Professor Zhi-Hong Jiang also explicitly introduced the achievements of the SKL of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (M.U.S.T.) in the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Macao.
After the grand opening ceremony, Academician Yung-chi Cheng and Chair Professor Paul Kwong-Hang Tam chaired a master forum and discussed with prestigious guests Academician Xin-Sheng Yao, Academician Kwok-Fai So, and Professor Rudolf Bauer, concerning the topic of “innovation and sustainable development of research and industry in TCM”. Academician Pei Gang from the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (CAS) and Prof. Mien-Chie Hung (President of China Medical University) also joined the forum online, and expressed their valuable opinions on “the importance of modernization of TCM”. Academician Kwok-Fai So also shared his experience in combining the traditional Chinese and Western medicine methods to study the efficacy of polysaccharide extracted from wolfberry in treating neurodegenerative diseases. Professor Rudolf Bauer provided suggestion on how to facilitate the introduction of TCM into mainstream Western medicine in more effective approaches. While Academician Xin-Sheng Yao pointed out the increasing acceptance of TCM in modern medicine. The atmosphere of the whole forum was very warm and the audience actively interact with the guests to discuss their opinions.
In the following days, the conference set up sub-forums and poster presentations on different issues related to the development of TCM. Members of the CGCM also gave regional reports at the meeting. The participating scholars unanimously expressed that attending this conference was indeed worthy and full of benefits.
The conference was attended by more than 400 participants from Europe, America, Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, etc. and provided a platform for exchanging the latest scientific research findings, which help to facilitate future TCM research, as well as the innovation and sustainable development of related industries.
