M.U.S.T. Vice President Chair Professor Paul Tam Invited to Deliver Keynote Speeches at BIOHK 2025

2025/09/12

Chair Professor Paul Kwong-Hang Tam, Vice-President of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), was invited as a distinguished keynote speaker for the annual international biotech exhibition and forum BIOHK2025 Hong Kong International Biotech Forum & Exhibition (Bio-HK 2025). The event was held from September 10 to 14, 2025. Vice-President Paul Kwong-Hang Tam delivered two keynote addresses on September 10 and 11, titled "A New Era in Stem Cells & Cell Therapy" and "AI + Traditional Eastern Health Sciences".

Keynote Speech by Vice President Paul Kwong-Hang Tam

On September 10, Chair Professor Paul Kwong-Hang Tam had presented "Regenerative Medicine for Liver Diseases.", introduced innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies centred on artificial intelligence, organoid technology, multi-omics analysis, and stem cell research, particularly focused on refractory liver conditions such as Biliary Atresia (BA) and liver fibrosis. Professor Tam emphasised that traditional surgical interventions have limited efficacy and poor prognoses, while precision regenerative medicine offers a new way for achieving tissue repair and functional reconstruction.

Professor Tam’s team shared their breakthrough in successfully cultivating the world’s first human BA liver organoid model. This model allows experimental validation of the key biological findings in settings closely replicating the clinical situation, and dissection of hitherto unknown disease pathways, therapeutic development, and tissue regeneration.

On September 11, Chair Professor Paul Kwong-Hang Tam delivered another speech titled "Smart Health for the ageing population," in which he discussed the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI), medical innovations, traditional medicines, and natural products in addressing global challenges posed by population aging. Professor Tam highlighted that by 2030, the global population aged over 60 is expected to increase to 1.4 billion. His presentation demonstrated the revolutionary applications of AI in healthcare, ranging from early disease diagnosis, medical image analysis, surgical planning, and robot-assisted telesurgery to accelerated drug discovery and toxicity prediction etc., which significantly enhancing the precision and accessibility of medical services. Professor Tam also highlighted groundbreaking advancements in AI-powered paediatric disease diagnosis, intelligent traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic systems, and emerging pathogen prediction.
