MUST Hosts 3rd Frontiers in Medicine Summit: Advances in Translational Medicine and Drug Development
The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), in celebration of its 25th Jubilee Anniversary, held the 3rd Frontiers in Medicine Summit, organized by the Medical Science Division (MSD). This two-day event brought together global leaders in biomedical research, translational medicine and medical education under the theme “Advances in Translational Medicine & Drug Development.”

Welcome Speech by President of M.U.S.T. Joseph Hun-wei Lee
During the opening ceremony, Chair Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, Vice Chancellor and President of MUST welcomed all guests and noted that this summit is a key highlight of MUST’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. Over the past 25 years, the University has undergone significant expansion, establishing nine faculties, enrolling over 23,000 students, and establishing multiple national-level research platforms. He emphasised that this year’s summit, themed Translational Medicine and Drug Development, showcases innovative research from the Faculty of Medicine and offers a valuable opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration to address humanity’s most urgent health challenges, while supporting Macao’s development and strategic vision.
Congratulatory speech by Dr. Iek Long Lo, Director of the Health Bureau of the Macao SAR
Representing the Macao SAR Government’s Health Bureau, Dr. Iek Long Lo delivered a congratulatory speech, extending warm congratulations on the successful opening of the event and sincere blessings for MUST’s 25th Anniversary. He noted that the summit brings together global experts to deeply explore advances in translational medicine and drug development, creating an important platform for academic exchange and international cooperation.
Dr. Lo emphasised that in response to pressing global health challenges—such as ageing populations, emerging infectious diseases, and the burden of chronic illness—the SAR Government is actively aligning with the national “Healthy China 2030” strategy and implementing the “Healthy Macau Blueprint”, which sets out 20 specific objectives and 52 key indicators to be achieved by 2030. These policies aim to embed health into all public policies and promote cross-sector collaboration to safeguard the population’s lifelong well-being.
This year’s “Frontiers in Medicine” Summit provided an international platform for academic exchange in cutting-edge medical research and education. Key topics included infectious epidemiology, vaccine development, artificial intelligence, stem cells, oncology, reproductive medicine, new drug development in Chinese medicine, and innovations in medical education.
On April 9, keynote speeches were delivered by: Prof. Robert Langer (MIT) on “Tissue Engineering and Drug Delivery Systems”; Prof. Zhanfeng Cui (University of Oxford, CAE) on “Bioreactors for Regenerative Medicine”; and Chair Prof. Aiping Lyu (Hong Kong Baptist University; MAE) on “Integrative Medicine and Future medicine Development”. Other speakers included Prof. Wanjin Hung(National University of Singapore), Prof. Demin Zhou(Peking University), Chair Prof. Yu Huang(City University of Hong Kong), Prof. Dazhuo Shi(Xiyuan Hospital of CACMS), Prof. Xiaoyan Shen(Fudan University), Prof. Bernard M Y Cheung(University of Hong Kong; ITC) and Prof. Peng Cao(Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine).

On April 10, keynote addresses included: Prof. Junshi Chen (Chinese Academy of Engineering; China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment) on “The Concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Food Homology and its Applications”; and Prof. A. Francis Stewart (Dresden University of Technology; MAE) on “The MLLs in Mammalian Development: More than Just Histone 3 Lysine 4 Methyltransferases”.
